Utah Girls Empowered to Expand Their Horizons

Northern Utah Expand Your Horizons

More than 400 young women across grades 6 to 9 elected to spend their Saturday learning about science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) careers through hands-on workshops in disciplines that included veterinary medicine, robotics, engineering, chemistry, biology, computer science, weather and even rocketry! Attendees were able to experience three of 28 hands-on workshops taught by women in the field.

These young women took part in the 12th Annual Northern Utah Expanding Your Horizons in Science and Mathematics (EYH) conference designed to motivate them to attend college and pursue challenging career fields. The conference was held November 3, 2012, with opening remarks from Miss Utah, Kara Arnold, who earned a degree in biochemistry from the University of Utah and serves as a champion for STEM education. Dr. Susan Madsen provided the closing keynote address, highlighting the benefits of a higher education and the many opportunities open to women.

The Northern Utah EYH conference, organized by ATK Aerospace Group, is one of three such conferences held annually in Utah. Upcoming conferences are planned for March 2 at Utah Valley University and March 9 at Salt Lake Community College. Learn more about EYH at www.expandingyourhorizons.org. A summer camp experience, based on an extension of the EYH model, is offered by Westminster College. Details can be found at: http://www.westminstercollege.edu/camps/index.cfm?parent=1425&detail=4568.
